The combined total cost of the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan was projected to exceed $1 trillion on May 30, according to the National Priorities Project. The United States has appropriated $747.3 billion for the war in Iraq and $299 billion for the war in Afghanistan. Taxpayers in Rockingham County will pay $760 million for total defense spending in fiscal year 2010 alone, according to the non-profit research organization. That same amount of money could provide more than 200,000 people with health care for one year, fund almost 60,000 university scholarships for one year, or equip more than 1 million homes with renewable electricity for one year, according to the organization. A pending supplemental making its way through Congress would add about $37 billion to the $136.8 billion spent on the wars during the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.
