SUPPORT FOR DEEP PENTAGON CUTS: Fifteen advocacy groups are throwing their weight behind a resolution offered by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) that calls for major cuts in military spending to invest in domestic priorities.

Lee’s nonbinding resolution calls for reductions of up to $350 billion in the defense budget and recommends, among other options, winding down long-running wars and shuttering 60 percent of overseas bases to save money.

"Wasteful funding at the Pentagon should be immediately channeled to meet the urgent needs of our time, including health care for every American, investment in public health preparedness, and swift and effective action to prevent climate annihilation," Robert Weissman, president of Public Citizen, said in a statement. "Citizens deserve to see their taxpayer dollars invested in them rather than funneled down a military-industrial complex black hole."
