Notes and Sources

Federal taxes collected from, or on behalf of, individuals. In addition to individual income taxes, this amount includes the worker's and employer's shares of payroll taxes for Old-Age, Survivors, Disability, and Hospital Insurance (Social Security and Medicare). It also includes taxes on estate and trust income. The total individual tax amount reflects gross collections minus refunds (including refundable tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit).
Data are available at the state level and go back to 2002.

Note: the colors that represent high and low values on the map are re-calibrated for each year.
