Trump's Unhinged Attack on Iran

June 21, 2025

President Trump’s unconstitutional act of war on Iran puts the U.S. and world at grave risk of provoking another U.S. war of choice in the Middle East. After two unjustified and disastrous Middle East wars of agression in the last 25 years, it is beyond shameful that the President, his advisors, and Pentagon leadership learned nothing from those debacles. War is to be avoided, not started capriciously and when diplomatic options are far from exhausted.

President Trump’s choice to join Israel’s gratuitous bombing of Iran risks untold American, Iranian and Israeli lives and treasure. It is now far from assured that the U.S. can avoid wider war - something the candidate Trump promised would not happen on his watch.

Peace does not come from acts of war, contrary to the President’s unhinged remarks after the attacks. Peace comes from diplomacy and good faith, both of which this administration has abandoned.

This decision is also the fault of the U.S. Congress, which has abdicated its constitutional responsibility to make decisions about war and peace for more than 20 years. Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie have introduced a bipartisan War Powers Resolution to stop this madness. Congress should convene and act on it immediately to stop further escalation in a new Middle East war that Americans did not ask for and do not want.
